A Flower Within A Flower…

Hibiscus flower pistil in top view with stamen and stigma
Oh! Yes!!! It is a red hibiscus flower smiling in my small hibiscus plant 🙂
Red hibiscus flower with sticky stigma
This is the second flower that bloomed in my plant. Notice the stigma… For the first time I thought it is mutated… But, this flower is also with three conjoined stigmas (unlike the usual five) on the pistil tip! There is no end for creativity of nature!

This abnormality has long puzzled geneticists. But an important part of the mystery has been solved by a team of biologists at the University of California, San Diego. They have identified a trio of genes that produce this flower within a flower.
