Shankarapura Jasmine – ಆಹಾ! ಮಂಗಳೂರು ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ!

Shankarapura Jasmine or Mangaluru Mallige Flower

 Shankarapura Jasmine/Mangaluru Mallige

As the intensely reinvigorating fragrance of a single Shankarapura Jasmine or Mangaluru jasmine spreads everywhere, it feels heavenly! That’s why it is the favourite of all! This jasmine variety is native to Shankarapura (Dakshina Kannada, now belongs to Udupi). Since my childhood times, it is spread throughout Dakshina Kannada district. Mangaluru jasmine is a must to have in every Dakshina Kannadiga’s backyard. Now, many families earn by selling Mangaluru jasmine itself! Iit is the most praised, cultivated and loved jasmine variety that is transported to nearby metropolitan cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai and even exported to Dubai! Thank God! It is patented!
Mangaluru/Shankarapura Jasmine belongs to Oleaceae family. Till today, I couldn’t find exact identification of this jasminum species. Wikipedia dispays a photo of Shankarapura jasmine as Jasminum Sambac but it it not. Jasminum sambac is another jasmine variety known as dundu mallige in Mangaluru.
More About Jasmine from Wikipedia
Jasmine, the queen of flowers, is called the “Belle of India” or the “Queen of fragrance” as it is exquisitely scented to soothe and refresh. In different parts of India it is called by different names—Mogra, Motia, Chameli, Malli puvvu, Jaati, Mallige, Juhi, Mogra or Moonlight in the grove. It is reported that there are 300 varieties of jasmine. It is also stated that jasmine crossed the seas—from Asia to Europe, landing first along the Mediterranean Sea, conquering Greece and Turkey, reaching Western Europe through Spain, then France and Italy and finally landing in England in the latter part of the 17th century. (By the 18th century, jasmine scented gloves became popular in Britain).
